Collecting Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They love the colors and the beauty of the wide array of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. This article will examine the things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.

To begin with you need to learn all you can on the various gemstones available. This knowledge will help you to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value they closer they are to natural spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They drop in value the farther they are from the natural color.

How a stone has been cut is the second most important value determination to consider before buying. The precision of the cut is the factor which determines how much light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will fully factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.

The next factor to consider is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This means the gemstones purity with no internal conclusions, particles or spots within the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Gemstones are often categorized according to size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference regarding specific gravity or relative density and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be a great hobby. And there are so many different types in gemstones you can collect. You could try collecting Olivine (Peridot), Opal (Girasol) or Tourmaline and then try others. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the United States. In Georgia you can find Ruby, Beryl, Amethyst, Citrine, Garnet and Quartz.

The healing powers of gems remain a controversial issue, but are mentioned for
centuries by healers, shamans and medicine men. Whether it's a fact or a placebo
effect doesn't matter, if it helps. The safest approach is to wear the gemstone
in skin contact to the troubled part of the body. Zircon ,for example, is said
to be of help for varicose veins, blisters and testicles problems.
