The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well to begin with gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to collect and work with the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. Follow along as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.

The very first step in beginning this hobby the wise way is by acquiring knowledge about them. By taking a look in your local bookstore you can find books on the subject that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

Color is a very important part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer the color comes to its purer spectral value the more valuable the stone becomes. Remember that the spectral colors are yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange and red. Colors that tend to be paler or darker are considered a lower value.

The cut of the gemstone is an important aspect to consider in evaluating gemstones. The gemstone must be cut with precision to reflect the light properly. A poor cut will be muted or washed out. Color saturation, color hue and color tone will always appear inconsistent

The next factor to look at is the clarity of the gemstone under consideration. This is talking about the purity of the gemstone with no internal conclusions, spots, or particles inside the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size aspect because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different pricing structures. This is due to the difference regarding specific gravity or relative density and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting gemstones as a hobby can become an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go looking for gemstones. Take the example of the US. In New Mexico you'll find Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Rock Crystal and Obsidian And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or check out raw material in the peridot fields in Chudleigh Park, Queensland, Australia.
